You Ask, We Investigate: Neighborhood Worries

Tools

Dan Garcia

City residents in one Eastside neighborhood are living in fear, but not of violence. Construction is going on at the Jasper Water Treatment Plant.

When it first started many homes were bought up and people had to move out. Now residents living near the River Road Waste Water Treatment Plant are worried the same could happen to them.

You Ask, We Investigate got a letter from Darlene Burnett. She says she has a disability and lives on a fixed income. Darlene is worried because she lives on Dee Street and says she remembers hearing when upgrade work starts on the plant, the city is going to come in and buy up property and move everyone out, much the same way they did on the other plant.

"The River Road Treatment plant is as big as it's going to get."

"The River Road Treatment plant is as big as it's going to get." Public Works Director Scott Taylor says where ever that original information came from it was wrong. "We don't have anymore land to expand north, nor do we plan on expanding the plant and having to purchase additional land" he said.

There is some work underway and should be complete very soon. Bottom line.... "No, we are not going to go buy any property like we did when we expanded the Jasper water treatment plant," said Taylor. And he adds, if any expansion is necessary in the future, it will probably happen to the west of the city.

"The River Road Treatment plant is as big as it's going to get."

Scott Taylor mentioned some work being done. That project is designed to eliminate noxious odors that come from the plant and plague the neighborhood. Taylor says the work should wrap up by the end of the month or the first part of January.
