It's getting colder outside, and that means thousands of Texomans are burning wood in the fire place. But before you head out to buy some wood make sure you're getting your money's worth. "My question is what is the volume of the size of a cord of wood?" asked Ed Lane.
It's also the question many others should be asking. You see, Ed Lane has burned a wood fire for at least 25 years. And he says, a cord of wood is pretty standard. "A cord of wood is 8 foot long, four foot wide four foot tall. That's 128 cubic feet of wood," says Lane.
But Lane says that's been shrinking for the past few years. He especially noticed it on the first cord of wood he bought this year. This stack represents half the first cord he bought this year. The wood pile was only six feet long."Also the length of the logs is also shorted. The length of the logs should be 24 inches long and I've got some 14 inch logs in this stack right here.." says Lane.
Ed Lane says with wood going for $250.00 a cord and by his estimation, between 65 and 72 percent of the wood being eliminated by short cutting and stacking, You're losing big money. So what's his advise? "I would say if you get some body's name out of the paper before they start stacking the wood, you ask them now much that you're going to get for that price and what they're calling a cord," says Lane.
In short be sure to find out the lengths and heights of the stacks. And make sure you get all the information up front--before you pay and before they unload. If you've got a question give us a call. The number is 687-U-ASK. That's 687-8275.
