Wichita County residents have a big decision to make. The sheriff's office is again asking voters to approve a pay raise, hoping this time deputies will be paid the increase. Commissioners say if that happens--it will be one reason taxes go up. That has some residents going back and forth in support the sheriff's office, or keep my taxes low. KAUZ General Manager Mike DeLier's made up his mind.
For the second time in the past four years, sheriff's deputies are trying to get enough signatures from registered voters on a petition to force a pay raise issue with Wichita County Commissioners.
It is the second time they've had to go to the voters. In 2004, deputies secured enough signatures, got the issue on the ballot and then voters passed the referendum. But then Wichita county commissioners decided to fight the issue in court and have successfully stalled the attempts for deputies to get more than a cost of living raise for several years now.
Deputies want to have pay parity with other Texas counties our size. And why shouldn't they? After all, they put their lives on the line every time they report for work. The sheriff's department also has the responsibility of housing and overseeing prisoners in Wichita County, duties many other Texas counties don't have to deal with. They also point out that low pay equates to a rapid turnover and a loss of experience.
Deputies pointed out this week, that what they are asking would cost taxpayers less than half that amount. County Commissioners announced this week they are seeking a four-and a half percent increase.
Deputy Lieutenant Derek Meador says, for commissioners to use the excuse that the county is raising taxes because they might have to grant deputies a pay raise is not fully the truth. We believe these hard working deputies and their families deserve the benefit of a raise to a level that is equal to other counties in texas our size -- and we hope you do too.
